Women
in Mathare Valley are mostly uneducated and have no
skills
for employment. Prostitution is a major source of income for women living there.
The Mathare Community Outreach Project has purchased sewing machines and is
providing ongoing training to women teaching dress making and tailoring skills.
We have provided women with their own sewing machines as a means of establishing
income for their families. We hope soon to be able to a create a "micro
enterprise" program if funds are made available. This will enable us to
provide loans to establish small businesses.
The child mortality rate of
children under five in Mathare has been over 90% due to malnutrition. We provide
training to mothers on how to prepare the best meals for their families with the
little income they can generate. The mothers have their own "school"
which they attend twice a week, to learn about nutrition and get practical
lessons on meal preparation. We also provide food and clothing for the mothers
to help support their families.
